Crusaders top Braves 56-20

The North Greenville Crusaders had 497 total offensive yards in their 56-20 victory against the Chowan Braves Saturday at Garrison Stadium.

The Crusaders stopped the Braves on their first possession and never looked back. Crusader running back Travis Mosley, junior sports management, scored first after a series of rushes.

Adrian Escalona, sophomore accounting, kicked an on side kick that was recovered by the Crusaders. Eric Moeller, senior mathematics connected with Brandon Dobbins, freshman business, for a 44 yard gain.

Travis Talbert, sophomore business administration, was hit by Moeller in the end zone to make the score 14-0 in the first quarter. The Braves didn't let up and went on to score twice in the first quarter.

The Crusaders answered again with rushes by Mosley and a pass from Moeller to Talbert to give the Crusaders the lead again. The first quarter ended with the Crusaders leading 21-14.

But it was in the second quarter that the Crusaders really began to shine. Isaac Tate, senior business administration, led the powerful Crusader defense that only allowed the Braves six more points in the game. The Crusaders scored three more touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter alone.

Dobbins caught a 22 yard pass and Talbert caught a 28 yard pass for two of the touchdowns and Tony Ashmore, sophomore broadcast media, ran 5 yards for the third down. Escalona nailed a season long 38 yard field goal with just three seconds left in the first half giving the Crusaders a lead of 44-14.

Escalona hit another 33 yard field goal in the third quarter. The Braves scored once more with 9:55 left in the game and attempted a two-point conversion that was intercepted by the Crusaders' Josh Williams, freshman broadcast media who returned it 99 yards to give the Crusaders an extra two points. Matt Moore, sophomore international business, would score the last touchdown for the Crusaders with a final score of 56-20.

Mosley and Talbert led the offensive game for the Crusaders, and once again, Tate led the defense who allowed only 389 yards.

The Crusaders are now 2-6 for the season.

They will travel to Jacksonville, FL for a Thursday night game with Jacksonville University at 7:00 p.m.

A crowd of 3,400 gathered at Younts Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 15 for the first on-campus Homecoming football game in school history. The NGU Crusaders battled Webber International in a close game that left the Crusaders short at the end of regulation 20-18.

Webber's Steve Chancey scored first for the Warriors with 9:01 remaining in the first quarter after a 13 play drive that lasted almost 6 minutes. The Crusaders' Adrian Escalona, sophomore accounting, answered on the next possession with a 28-yard field goal making the score 7-3.

Webber blocked North Greenville's punt and recovered on the Crusaders' 9-yard line resulting in a touchdown that extended the Warriors lead 14-3 at the half.

Crusader quarterback Eric Moeller, senior mathematics hit Brandon Dobbins, freshman business administration with a 16-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter making the score 14-10. The next nine minutes were controlled by both teams' defenses and neither team was able to score until Escalona kicked a 30-yard field goal to bring the Crusaders within one. With only 3:49 seconds left in the game Escalona kicked another 27-yard field goal giving the Crusaders their first lead of the day 16-14.

The Webber Warriors' Jeremiah Chambliss returned a punt 58 yards and quarterback Dedrick Sykes found P.J. Curbeam for a 9-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion failed and the Warriors regained the lead 20-16.

With only 1:12 left in the game the Crusaders had one last chance to score but Moeller's pass was intercepted by JaMarcus Watkins. The Warriors ran the clock down to 0:07 and on fourth down Sykes ran out of the back of the end zone. The safety gave the Crusaders two points making the final score 20-18.

Escalona led the Crusaders in scoring with 10 points. Moeller completed 254 yards passing and was 26 of 50 with two interceptions. Travis Talbert, sophomore business administration, led the receivers with 8 catches for 108 yards. Running back Travis Mosley, junior sport management, who did not play last game because of an injury, finished Saturday's game with 25 carries for 96 yards. Linebacker Isaac Tate, senior business administration, led the defense with 10 tackles and had one interception.
