With four seniors playing their final home game at the Pepsi Soccer Stadium, the North Greenville University women's soccer team looked to send them out on the right note.

North Greenville kept the ball in their opponents' end for most of the game only allowing the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Knights to get six shots on the goal, while scoring a goal in each half to take a 2-0 win.

"I just can't say enough about the girls," North Greenville coach Chad Gfeller said. "They played a great game today."

The Crusaders found the back of the net early in the first half when Whitney Doublestein, sophomore sport management, took a pass from Ashley Jackson, sophomore sport management, left corner of the goal at the 16 minute mark to take a 1-0 lead.

The North Greenville defense sparsely allowed St. Andrews in their end during the first half as the Knights had just two shots on goal and were kept off balance.

The game remained separated by just one goal until the last part of the second half when Doublestein connected again, this time off of a beautiful pass from midfielder Bridgett Smith, freshman undecided, to put the game away.

"It felt nice to score two goals. The team worked hard and it was a total team effort to get the win," Doublestein said.

"Whitney did a great job of hustling up top and getting those goals," Gfeller said. "I thought that she really worked her tail off and did a great job winning the game for us."

St. Andrews had several chances to get on the board, but was denied by the Crusaders defense and the play of goalkeeper Alexus Robinson, junior accounting, who had four saves.

"I thought that, defensively, the girls played well and through the midfield, there was a major effort for everyone to play as hard as they could," Gfeller said.

Four seniors, Robinson; backup goalkeeper Erin Yuill, early childhood education; midfielder Michelle Hoppes, interdisciplinary studies; and midfielder Alexis, intercultural studies, were honored before the game for their contributions to the program.

Doublestein said that the team accomplished two objectives in its final home game of the season.

"It was important to get a win for the seniors today. Michelle [Hoppes] has been here for a long time and the other girls joined recently," Doublestein said. "We had a goal before the season to win five games and we did that."

North Greenville improves its record 5-9 on the season and travels to Clayton State today for a 4:30 p.m. game.
