Administration has buckled down on the content of certain channels that were available through the NGU cable network.

Certain channels were removed from the network within the past few weeks. The channels that were taken off air were Cartoon Network, FX, "a Movie" Channel and one of the Spanish channels, said Paul Garrett, director of academic planning and assessment.

"I'm not sure why Cartoon Network was taken off the air, but I think it's sad that cartoons are another thing added to the restricted list," said Michael Barrieau, senior history.

The main reason for the removal is inappropriate content shown on each channel. FX, for their liberal editing of movies; Cartoon Network, for the later shows televised during "Adult Swim" and the Spanish channel because some of the content is "bordering risqué," said Garrett.

"It's sad that my 4-year old cousin can watch something that I as an 18-year old mature adult can't," said Dale Pirkle, freshman biology.

The removal of those channels left open spaces for new channels to be added. The Disney Channel, Toon Disney and ESPNU, which is a sports news network for college and university levels, were added.

Since the changes, Student Services has received very few complaints. However, the most common complaint among the students is the removal of Cartoon Network.

"I like watching the kid shows during the afternoon," said Lauren Shirley, sophomore interdisciplinary studies.

Some students haven't even noticed the changes that have occurred. "I'd rather spend my time sleeping then anything else anyway," said Kacie Bright, freshman early childhood development.

This programming change may not be the only one on the horizon for the channel packaging. A survey will be sent out by the end of the semester asking students what channels they prefer. This will help determine which channels receive the most active viewing.

"While I can understand the feeling of responsibility by the staff for its students, at some point, our spiritual well-being is going to be in our own hands," said Jeremiah Verdin, sophomore Christian studies.
