This school year's first coordinated residence hall event has finally come. Halloween night, the doors of the female dorms were open for anyone to come in. Men got to visit their female friends in the girl's living quarters, and professors and residents from the outside community were able to "Trick-or-Treat" with their kids from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"It's so great to see all the cute little kids dressed in costumes, and being able to give them candy," said Rachel Cole, senior church music.

Many male students were pleased just to have fellowship with the girls, and watch movies on campus together.

"It's neat! I think it's cool to get to see where the girls live and what their dorms look like," said West Jones, freshman undecided.

"I think the open dorm night is a wonderful time to share in the experience of fellowship with our our brothers and sisters in Christ," said Kennedi Johnson, sophomore broadcast media major.

The coordinated event is also intended to reach the community. Not only to allow children in the surrounding area to get plenty of sugar, but also to let the area see one of the sides of this Christian institution, the side of Christ.

"The open dorm program is to get the community involved. It is an alternative for going door to door. It also gives the guys a chance to see the girls dorms and see where they live," said Lorry Green, women's resident coordinator.

Female resident students were also competing for part of the McCormick Crown competition, decorating each of their halls respectfully. Decorations ranged from simple pumpkins and streamers to a Charles Schulz "Peanuts" theme.

"Working on the hall decorations brought us all closer and we got to know more about each other," said Morgan Williams, sophomore biology. "Plus we are very confident that Middle Howard is going to win."

Many male resident students were encouraged and inspired with ideas about the events and even how to bring out their inner Martha Stewart.

"I am inspired, after seeing many girls' dorm rooms to coordinate colors and bed spreads with my roommate," said Hans Ostrem, senior interdisciplinary studies.

"Guys should have open dorms," said Bronson Brown, freshman music education. "That would be the ultimate way to force us to clean our rooms."

Perhaps future planning of the coordinated dorm event might turn into a longer process. While there are currently no plans to further extend the existing program, there are ideas from some students.

"North Greenville should make open dorms an every day event," said Seth Mills, freshman undecided.

The coordinated event was a great success this year. Kids got their candy, men got to visit their girlfriend's rooms, and students got to fellowship together to watch a horror movie. The screams still echo through the halls today.

"Thanks to all the students for their generosity," said Dr. Pete Wilbanks, associate professor in Christian studies.

If you didn't get a chance to get involved with this semester's coordinated event, there will be another one occurring in the spring semester in time for Valentine's Day.
