Many artistic students showcased their artwork, poetry, and musical skills at the third biannual NGU Poetry Night Thursday, Oct. 27.

"[It was started] to teach young Christians how to go about doing art in a Christian fashion," said Dr. Gregory Bruce, assistant professor of English. "[It's] reclaiming the arts for Jesus."

Students piled into the band room with blankets and enjoyed the cookies, donuts and coffee that were offered.

"It was a night for students to hang out together and share [in] each others' talents," said Maggie Smith, sophomore undecided. "As I was walking in, I remember hearing a guy telling a poem about an internal conflict. He was talking about faith and its effect on hard times during his life."

As the night progressed, students were seen talking and sharing their personal feelings in an open forum.

"I really liked poetry night because it allowed students to show a side of themselves that you normally would not see," said Morgan Williams, sophomore biology. "[You were] introduced to see the closet poet or the shy guitarist that is invisible outside of specific circumstances."

"Poetry night has always been a break-out place for artists on campus, like Jacob Johnson. I thought Dave Schell was an amazing performer this year," said Brandon Batson, junior undecided. "It was nice that people took poetry night to heart this year."

The Poetry Night, which was sponsored by Bruce's modern poetry class, lasted from 8 p.m. until close to midnight when the students were asked to leave because of curfew. The schedule for performances was also switched around because of a donor in the building.

"I thought people were really disappointed because we felt as if the students who did not get a chance to perform were treated unfairly," said Joelle Kittrell, junior interdisciplinary studies.
