The North Greenville University L.I.G.H.T. teams are preparing for their trips coming up over Christmas break. The L.I.G.H.T. teams are mission teams made up of students, faculty and staff. Thirteen teams will be sent out over the Christmas, spring and summer breaks.
The acronym L.I.G.H.T is a summary of these short term mission tasks as they set out to bring the light of truth to a darkened world: "LOVING the lost as Jesus loved them; boldly INTERCEDING for the Holy Spirit to open doors and hearts to the gospel; GOING wherever God may lead; HELPING to meet the needs of diverse peoples through compassionate Christian ministries; and, most importantly, TELLING the good news of Jesus Christ to those who have not yet heard."
The trips during Christmas break are to Uganda and to the Gulf Coast. The Uganda team will be doing vacation Bible school, sports evangelism and children's ministry. The Gulf Coast team will aid in the hurricane relief.
A weekend of cross-cultural training prepared students.
"This isn't training for just one particular country, it's important to learn how to handle the different cultures no matter where you go," said Tara Burch, assistant BSU director.
Some students going had never planned on being a part of missions. Alissa Bass, freshmen business administration, is part of the team going to Uganda.
"Missions never really occurred to me, but after they announced the L.I.G.H.T. teams at a BSU meeting, I really felt the Lord wanted me to go," said Bass. She admits that she was nervous at first, "but as I saw the money rushing in, I have no idea where it came from, I knew it was of God, and now I'm not nervous at all."
"Ever since 6th grade I've really had a heart for the African people," said Lauren Reeder, senior elementary education, who is going on her second trip.
On her first trip to Uganda in May, Reeder made some close friends she's kept in touch with through email. "I am totally excitement, no nervousness at all," said Reeder.
