If you like discovering up-and-coming artists or learning more about older ones, you can take your pick by listening to the World Café.

World Café is a radio program produced by WXPN, the public radio service of the University of Pennsylvania, and is distributed across the country by National Public Radio (NPR). You can hear World Café from 7 to 9 p.m. on weekdays on listener supported station WNCW 88.7, which is the broadcast service of Isothermal Community College in Spindale, N.C.

The show's host is David Dye. He interviews various musical guests and/or bands showcasing their music and personalities. Artists or bands that have been featured in the past range from popular artists such as Coldplay, Neil Young and Sheryl Crow to more obscure artist such as Pink Martini, Aimee Mann and Adrianne Young. World Cafe has been on air since 1991 playing a blend of music such as rock, folk, alternative country and blues. The show plays music that is mostly from western countries or based in American or British music, even though its title, World Café, would suggest that ethnocentric music or tunes from around the world would be featured.

I recommend listening to the World Café while driving or doing homework. You can also listen to past shows online at http//:www.npr.org. The program sometimes features a "performance chat" with artists and the music Dye plays is interesting and provides an opportunity for new artists to be introduced.
