Dear Editor,
Let's take a look at the big picture in the world right now. In Iraq we have had over 2,000 soldiers die that are fighting for my freedom. The AIDS epidemic kills thousands of people a day and continues to spread throughout the world. Recently a devastating hurricane swept through the Gulf of Mexico and left a once vibrant city in rubble. And finally, a young high school senior has been missing in the country of Aruba for over 5 months. Yet, as I read our school newspaper and particularly the letters to the editor I am amazed at the things that are complained about, scrutinized and are essentially not a big deal.
If all we have to worry about is getting to class five minutes late after sitting in Chapel, I think that we are doing pretty well for ourselves. How about thanking God that you have the capabilities to get out of that chapel seat and are able to walk to class. Take the recent analysis of our Miss NGU beauty pageant and the scrutiny of a superb performance during Homecoming by our Theatron club. I think that these things should be celebrated! These students are using their talents to go further in life.
The young women were able to share their God-given talents, their beauty (they were in fact made in the eyes of The Maker) and their physical fitness, which falls in line with taking care of their Temple, a Biblical principle. I felt as if all the ladies did a fantastic job and truly believe that Elizabeth Tate will be a shining example of Christ and of North Greenville in the Miss South Carolina pageant. And with the Theatron club I guess that I cannot see how their "dance" wronged the school or themselves in any way. I believe that they should be applauded for their hard work and cheered on. Some of those very students in that skit may be the next Mel Gibson and revolutionize the movie industry towards Christ.
My good friend Eric Engle recently put it so well when he said that if Christians were actually concerned about real problems, even right on this campus, we would get so much more done for Christ. And as a Christian, I can't help but wonder what non-Christians think when we complain, pass negativity towards and waste time and effort on issues that really aren't important. As I step down from my soapbox I just ask that you think about your feelings on these issues. Are they really big enough of a deal to cause a fuss over? But, as all letters to the editor are, this is just my opinion.
