Three North Greenville students placed in the top ten of the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon in Georgia on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Tomas Kirstukas, junior international business, placed third in the marathon, finishing the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours and 57 minutes.

"I heard people say that you hit the wall of your abilities and those last few miles are so hard," said Kirstukas.

Kirstukas, a native of Lithuania, is on the tennis team. Cross-country is his secondary sport.

Matt Norman, junior business administration, and Mark Schandel, junior sport management, tied in tenth place at 3 hours, 5 minutes and 15 seconds. Both are members of the school cross-country team.

"Since I started running, I've always wanted to run a marathon," said Norman. "The course itself wasn't that hard. There weren't that many hills. It was a good course for first-time runners."

Around 350 runners represented 15 states and three countries. The top 10 runners qualified for the Boston Marathon, the oldest marathon in the United States. The Boston Marathon will take place on April 17 and requires a $95 entry fee.

"Finances are the biggest constraint right now because of the entry fee, a hotel room for two nights and a plane ticket to Boston," said Norman.

"It's so hard to run a marathon and not too many people can do it. It's a big challenge, I guess," said Kirstukas.
