Indoor soccer and dodgeball kicked off the spring semester intramural sports. With the threat of inclement weather looming during the winter months, Jon Phillips, coordinator for intramural sports, planned ahead.

"For the fall semester, there was only one round of sports. For the spring semester, I decided to split the sports into two halves," said Phillips. By splitting up the semester, it gives students two chances to play, or to play a game from each half of the spring season. Students can sign-up for the second spring season until Spring Break. Softball, kickball, and singles and doubles tennis will be offered.

The games take place at 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Hayes Gymnasium.

The basic gist of the rules are as any: don't be mean, don't use an alias, team captains must act like team captains, North Greenville isn't responsible for injuries and only play for one team.

"I've always loved sports; my schedule allows me time to enjoy them more this semester," said Greg Suits, senior music composition.

Faculty members like Amy Smallwood, ODEL instructor, take advantage of the fellowship of the sport. "I enjoy playing soccer and it's also a good way to connect with students outside of the classroom," said Smallwood. Other ODEL instructors David and Melinda Karlson join her.

Phillips didn't pick out these sports strictly on his own. He relied on input from those who do and do not participate in intramural sports to get ideas about what games to offer in his first year over the intramural sports program.

"I pick sports based on facility availability, the variety of games, and to maximize participation, not to encourage the competitive spirit to extremes like winning at all costs. I don't want players to sacrifice the credibility of their witness for Christ," said Phillips.

Currently, there are 143 students among 16 teams; 8 teams of 8 players are signed up for dodgeball and 8 teams of 10 players for indoor soccer. Currently, the Seawolves and West Crain Power are leading, both with 105 points, in dodge ball. NG United, The Internationals and Manchester United stand undefeated, in a three-way tie at the top of the win list in indoor soccer.

Sign-ups for the second spring semester season, that includes softball, kickball, and singles and doubles tennis, will be posted outside Phillips' office in the Tingle Student Center before Spring Break.
Advertisements for sign-up dates will be posted before Spring Break in the Todd Dining Hall, the 63'-64' Grill, and various other places around campus.

"I want to get the word out to people about Intramurals. Not just the players who are there semester-in and semester-out, but to the people who don't think Intramurals is for them, but they're willing to give it a shot," said Phillips.
