Crusaders lose close, win big

Men end week 1-2 losing to Wingate, Carson-Newman

Wednesday, Feb. 1, North Greenville challenged Wingate at Wingate's own Cuddy Arena in a close game that resulted in a loss for the Crusaders. The non-conference loss against Wingate brings North Greenville's season to 9-13 overall and improves Wingate's to 11-8.

Amonzo Gantt, junior business administration, was lead scorer for the evening, handing the Crusaders 16 points. Gantt's lead was closely followed by Daniel Morbitzer, senior sport management, who had a double-double game with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

North Greenville out-rebounded Wingate 44-34; seven of North Greenville's rebounds were contributed by Crusader's forward Andrew Nipper, sophomore sport management. Nipper and P.J. Schumacher, junior sport management, added 14 points apiece to the final score. The Crusader's fell to the Bulldogs with a final score of 85-76.

Saturday afternoon, Feb. 4, the Crusaders played Morris College at Hayes Gymnasium in an exciting game that proved victorious for North Greenville. Daniel Morbitzer gave North Greenville fans a reason to yell as he scored a career-high of 22 points, leading the Crusaders to victory.

North Greenville held a double-digit point advantage through the first half, reaching a 17 point lead with just nine minutes left in the half. The Hornets would not go with out a fight and managed to cut the Crusader's lead to nine at the half.

The feature of the afternoon came at 9:38 in the second half when Jordan Richmond, junior business administration, threw a beautiful alley-oop to Gantt, who took the opportunity to bring the entire crowd to a standing ovation with a dunk.

The Crusaders, on a rush, continued to amaze the crowd as Schumacher and Richmond both nailed beautiful 3-pointers, helping North Greenville reach their final victorious score or 94-78, improving their season to 10-13 overall.

Feb. 6, fans patiently anticipated what was expected to be a close rematch between North Greenville and Carson-Newman at Hayes Gymnasium. The Eagles defeated the Crusaders in their first meeting earlier this season 74-66. The game was set to start at 7 p.m. but did not begin until 7:30 p.m. because of the referees late arrival.
