Last Tuesday, the Student Senate met to discuss an untitled bill concerning library hours. The Senate passed the bill that proposed an increase in library hours providing greater availability to students in need of access before classes and on the weekends.

"Senate is here to help students. That's why we're here," said Branddon Benson, student body president, junior elementary education.

The proposed bill would change the Monday through Friday operating hours of the Hester Memorial Library to 7 a.m. until 12 a.m. Also, the weekend hours would change the operating hours on Saturday to 1 p.m. until 1 a.m. and the Sunday hours to 2:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. The Student Government Association (SGA) passed the bill; however, Billy Watson, director of Student Services, has not yet passed the bill.

"I want to make sure they [SGA] have thought out entirely what it [the bill] affects and who it [the bill] affects. What are the cost factors? Practical factors? Ideas that look good on paper do not work out all the time," said Billy Watson, director of Student Services, in regard to how he examines a bill presented to him for approval by the SGA. Watson wants to see the SGA present surveys and research supporting what they present as a student body need. If the bill lacks support or thought from various angles, Watson sends the bill back to the SGA requesting more research and thought on the proposed bill.

The Senate is considering several ideas for future improvements to student life. One bill suggests a student laundry plan. A student will be able to purchase a laundry debit card that could be swiped on the machines. Due to a lack of change machines in the laundry rooms, a debited card would ease the frustration of having to search for quarters before visits to the washer and dryer. Also, another possible bill will address the one-way street on the backside of campus. If enacted, the street will become a normal street after 6 p.m.
