Crusaders fall short of championship, despite posting most season wins

The sunny state of Florida played host to the men Crusaders basketball team of North Greenville University for the NCAA Division II Independent Tournament.
On Thursday, Feb. 16, the Crusaders took on Palm Beach Atlantic University in the first round as Jordan Richmond, junior business administration, earned a career-high 29 points. PJ Schumacher, junior sport management, scored 19 points and broke the single season record for made three-pointers, giving him 88 for the season. The previous record was 85. Forward Josh Burgess, junior sport management, scored 19 points as well for the Crusaders and pulled in eight rebounds, while forwards Amonzo Gantt, junior business administration, and Andrew Nipper, sophomore sport management, each raked in ten rebounds.
The Crusaders dominated over Palm Beach Atlantic with an 89-61 victory, advancing further into the tournament to challenge Central State University in round two.
The semifinals of the Tournament found the Crusaders battling against the Marauders of Central State on Friday, Feb. 17.
North Greenville lagged behind at the start as the Marauders took a quick 5-0 lead. The Crusaders responded with a 17-0 run over the next five minutes which featured lay ups from Nipper and three straight 3-point baskets, two by Schumacher and one from Richmond. The Crusaders took the lead 37-36 at halftime.
"The first half was all about runs," said Chad Lister, head coach for the Crusaders. "We put a good one together, and then they answered. I was more than a little disappointed with how the half ended, but give them credit, Central State turned up the defensive pressure and was rewarded at the buzzer."
The second half began with Central State taking a lead of 43-37. Minutes later, Richmond tied the game at 45-45 with a few free throws. The teams continued at a steady pace for minutes, forcing three ties and six lead changes, and the Marauders took their biggest night lead at 65-57 with less than five minutes remaining.
