North Greenville University's woes continue on the diamond as the baseball team has lost seven straight after a promising 2-1 start, falling to 2-8.
The Crusaders were swept by Carson-Newman College in a doubleheader Wednesday, Feb. 15, by scores of 14-1 in the first game and 6-3 in the second game.
In the first game, after a scoreless first inning, Carson-Newman erupted in the second and third innings, scoring 8 in the second inning and 6 in the third.
"We just struggled the whole game," said Tim Nihart, head coach.
The second game was a much closer contest, as pitcher Devin Vance, sophomore business administration, pitched six innings while giving up 3 earned runs, though 4 NGU errors marred their efforts by allowing three unearned runs.
"There's not much to talk about with that day," said Nihart on the second game.
North Greenville took a trip to Erskine College on Friday, Feb. 18. They were swept in a doubleheader by the Flying Fleet on Friday by scores of 13-6 and 5-3, and lost Saturday, Feb. 19, 5-3.
Although the pitching struggled, the offense performed best against Erskine. In the first game, outfielder Chris Tate, senior mathematics, in the middle of what Nihart calls a "phenomenal start to the season," was 3-for-4, while first baseman Dustin Pace, freshman early childhood education, got 3 RBI on one hit, and designated hitter Rick Broadway, junior sport management, had an RBI double.
In the second game Friday, Erskine scored all of their five runs in the first inning.
"We can't get through the first inning," said Nihart.
Pitcher Dylan Davidson, junior sport management, shut down Erskine for five 1/3 innings, and gave up no runs.
Tate and second baseman Matt Britt, junior sport management, went 2-for-3, and shortstop Mike Reis, junior Christian studies, went 1-for-2 with a double.
Speaking of Saturday's game, Nihart said "We kicked the ball around a little bit," as NGU committed untimely errors, which may have cost them a victory.
Brandon Young, junior marketing, allowed three earned runs in six innings of work.
Tate and Pace both went 2-for-3.
Nihart remains hopeful for the rest of the season. He says that out of the 30-man roster, the team has 17 new players, and that "things are slowly coming together." The Crusaders also have a seven-game home stand approaching.
This week the Crusaders take on Lincoln Memorial in a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 21. NGU will go against Fairmont State University in a three-game series over Feb. 24 and 25 and against Georgia State University on Feb. 28. The Fairmont State games will be aired on WNGR 95.5.
