For those who live off campus, the college experience may at sometimes seem less connected than that of resident students.
In one sense, living off campus does not provide "the same sense of community" verses living on campus said Charlie Kennett, senior, interdisciplinary studies. Yet others claim they receive a more rounded college experience because of the freedoms they have due to living off campus.
So, for some of those that feel as though perhaps they are missing out, or those that just want to mingle and enjoy a free meal, there is the Commuter's Luncheon, it's a chance to bring commuters together in one place which creates that "sense of community".
"I didn't go at first, but now I attend it regularly…all the food is generally good, I can't argue with free food…I appreciate the churches donating the food. I am able to see people that I normally wouldn't see outside class." Tyler Chapman, Junior, Broadcast Media.
"It's great to fellowship with people I don't see often; it's something needed as a whole. The BSU council works so hard for the commuters as there aren't any other activities on campus for us" Sarah Deas-White, senior early childhood."The purpose of the Commuter's Luncheon is to get local churches involved with the students, provide the Commuters with activities, and to serve the commuters with a free lunch."
This past weeks luncheon was hosted by First Baptist Spartanburg; "We want to get students involved." Robert Hargrove, Collegiate Minister of First Baptist Spartanburg Church. First Baptist Spartanburg offers many mission opportunities for college students seeking to involve themselves in missions. If you would like to learn more you can contact Robert Hargrove by e-mail, RHargrove@FBS.org.
Unfortunately, there are not enough churches sponsoring the Commuter's luncheon, if you know of a church that may be interested please contact Cayman Lucy, Assistant BSU Director at 7158.
