Residents Assistants picked up trash along a 3-mile stretch between North Tigerville Road and Chinquapin Road (Look Up Lodge) on Highway 11 on Saturday, March 18. Twenty-eight students and two staff members assisted with the clean up.

"We were asked by Max Mheim [from the Glassy Mountain Fire Department] if we wanted to adopt a 2-mile stretch of that road," said Billy Watson, director of student services. "He worked on the wreck that Brittany [Fogg] was involved in last month."

Mheim is also the Vice President for the Cherokee Foothills National Scenic Byway Association, which approached North Greenville for the highway adoption.

Plans now are to adopt a stretch of Highway 11, Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, and place a sign for North Greenville University.
"We are also wanting to place a sign in memory of Brittany," said Watson. The details are still uncertain. "It wouldn't be up forever, but at least for a while."

"I was told [the students] extremely enjoyed it and they wanted to do it again," said Lorry Green, women's housing coordinator. "I think it made the students feel good and proud."

"It was a very rewarding experience," said Morgan Williams, sophomore biology. "I didn't realize how much trash was on the side of the road."

"Having this also made the students aware of our own responsibilities of throwing trash out of their car," said Green.
Watson commented that the students "had a sense of making a difference. They had the feeling of accomplishment by making the road look better."

"I had fun, and I would like to do this again," said Williams.

"I like picking up trash for Jesus," said Nathaniel Balough, junior mathematics.
"We plan to expand the clean up to other groups of students and not just the R.A.'s," said Watson. "I would like to see NGU adopt other places."

Now, NGU will continue to clean up that stretch of Highway 11 four times a year, each on a Saturday.

"Not only are we impacting our community through impact teams and ministry, but now we can use this as a way to impact," said Watson.

"I just want to thank everybody for coming out or volunteering," said Green.
