Students took a break from books and television sets to listen to the musical works of Jacob Johnson, Brandon Batson and Blake Rochester in the Tingle Student Center on Monday, March 27.
"We just thought it would be nice to have a laid-back, fun event on campus for students to have something to do instead of driving all the way downtown," said Jacob Johnson, sophomore undecided.
Johnson, who has been playing guitar for eight years, opened up the night with an instrumental, and not long after followed it with "ACLU," a song Johnson wrote about the downfalls of the American Civil Liberties Union.
Rochester, freshman biology, followed Johnson with a number on the bass. Rochester, an accomplished bass player, is a member of Joyful Sound.
Johnson came back on stage with a harmonica and Brandon Batson, junior interdisciplinary studies, joined on the drums for a few songs.
"Basically, we always have worship services on campus and Jacob and I sing secular songs as a ministry so we wanted to do something on campus," said Batson.
Batson brought up the end of the show with a guitar and vocals performance. Batson has performed praise and worship in many of the Chapel services this semester and last. He is one of the lead singers for the Baptist Student Union praise band, as well as a member of Joyful Sound.
"I think it's important to let students to be involved because if you have big activities all the time people feel obliged to go but with smaller activities more people can enjoy them," said Kelly Cooper, Student Activities Coordinator.
The Brandon Batson Experience also performed. The group is made up of Batson; Matt Sain, junior business administration; Austin Connelly, sophomore undecided; Lauren Powers, junior music performance; and Adam Hughes, junior business administration.
'I have enjoyed playing with Brandon over the past year, I just wish he knew more chords," said Hughes. "I hope people enjoy hearing our songs as much as we enjoy playing them."
The Tingle Student Center has been the venue for a number of concerts over the past year, including performances from The Enclaved, Teen Pop Sensation and Firefly Summer.
