Steven Lester, freshman broadcast media, is stepping out beyond the books and hallways to produce the independent film, Broken, a story of seven college students in the last week of their summer vacation.

The film will deal with the issues that these students face, such as purity, leadership and drinking and driving.

Matt Huff, freshman English; Alan Williams, senior management; Whitney Pund, freshman broadcast media; and Erin Drawdy, junior print media, fill in the lead roles, while Courtney Lynn, freshman psychology, and Callie Holden, senior broadcast media, make up the support cast. Lester, Beth Arey, senior psychology; Stephen McMahan, sophomore broadcast media; and Mike Wallace, junior broadcast media, take care of the film production.

Lester wrote the script last semester and began casting and planning to transform the script to film since January. The cast and crew spent Spring Break in filming and plan to resume filming in the summer. Lester is hoping the film will be finished and ready to debut by Fall 2006.

"This is an independent film for me to start my portfolio up for film school because that is where I feel I need to be," said Lester. He described the film as dramatic and artistic.

At the moment, Lester is looking for churches and Christian organizations to sponsor the film.

"One of the reasons I wanted to make a movie like this is that it is a Christian-based film and some of the questions in this movie are never answered and that is what makes it real. I think that is what Christian media is lacking, that realness," said Lester.

"We've started promoting on The Vibe, and we will be airing our teaser on The Vision," said Lester.

"The Illusion has really influenced me. I hate to say it, but the way Smallville is shot influenced me," said Lester. "The film is not directly about my life, but it deals with issues I have grown up with and around."
