North Greenville University's baseball team record has slipped to 8-25 after losing two out of three games against the Chowan College Braves and having a home doubleheader against Tusculum College rained out.

On Friday, March 24, NGU paid a visit to Chowan in Murfreesboro, N.C., for a three-game series. The Crusaders opened the series with a barrage of 17 hits in a 9-4 victory. Third baseman Carlos Cardenas, senior international business, led the way by going 4-for-5 and hitting for the cycle and drove in four runs. Centerfielder Chris Tate, senior mathematics, went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. As a team, NGU stole four bases on five attempts, as Tate and shortstop Mike Reis, junior Christian studies, each had two, while catcher Rick Broadway, junior sport management, tacked on the fifth.
Pitcher Brett Hamilton, sophomore mathematics, picked up the save in 1 1/3 innings.

"It was awesome," said head coach Tim Nihart on Cardenas hitting for the cycle.
Saturday, March 25 proved to be a different story for the Crusaders as they played Chowan in a doubleheader as Chowan swept NGU by scores of 5-0 and 6-4.

In the first game, the Crusaders' bats were largely silenced as they only mustered two hits against Chowan freshman pitcher Bryan Hill, who threw a complete game and struck out three batters. Pitcher Devin Vance, sophomore business administration, also threw a complete game for NGU, and went six innings, giving up 4 earned runs and striking out eight. Vance actually didn't give up an earned run until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Chowan scored 4 runs off of four hits.

"Vance did a great job; we just didn't give any run support," Nihart said of the dearth of offense.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Crusaders failed to capitalize on five walks and two errors, and left nine runners on base, six of which were in scoring position. Leftfielder Eric Loy, senior business administration, went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and pitcher Dylan Davidson, junior sport management, went the distance while giving up five earned runs, striking out six, and only walking one.

"Again, we just had a lack of offense," said Nihart.

Today, the Crusaders will take the field in a home game against Milligan College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. before traveling to USC-Aiken tomorrow at 6 p.m.. Thursday, the Crusaders have rescheduled their March 21 doubleheader against Tusculum; the first pitch will be at 1 p.m. The Milligan and USC-Aiken games can be heard on WNGR, 95.5 The Vibe.
