A local businessman spotlighted as a guest speaker at the Business Club meeting on Wednesday, March 29. Stewart Spinks shared his story and some advice on achieving success in business.
"The meeting is to raise awareness that North Greenville University is not just a Christian studies university and help students make contact with a businessman that has experience in building a business," said Dr. Jon Boulet. Spinks brought sage, time-tested advice to students. "Look for opportunities and follow your passion," said Spinks in a summary statement of elements essential to the success of a businessperson.
By way of introduction, Dr. Jimmy Epting, university president, reminded students of the property Spinks owns here in Tigerville. Spinks owns the one corner of the four-way stop at the intersection of Highway 414, N. Tigerville Rd. and Highway 253 that North Greenville University does not own. Jokingly, Epting requested students to spread a rumor that Spinks will build a station in his corner of the intersection. "He knew this [North Greenville University] was going to be a great place. Start a rumor that a Spinx is coming to Tigerville so that he'll have to do that for us," said Epting.
The possibility of a Spinx being constructed in Tigerville is a reality.
"Hopefully, with Dr. Johnson's help, we will have a little business across the street," said Spinks. He did not mention any specific timetable for bringing a Spinx to Tigerville, but he did mention the purpose behind placing a store by North Greenville. "I would like to have a partnership with this school and use the future store as an incubator for the business department of North Greenville University," said Spinks. The store would be unique as the students of the business department at North Greenville would draw up the plans and operate the NGU Spinx with the assistance of the professors in the business department.
As the night continued, Spinks encouraged students to be willing to work hard, take risk and complete any job given to them.
"Some people see opportunities and some people see obstacles. Sometimes, you can't tell the difference between them," said Spinks.
The meeting ended in prayer, and several students came forward to ask Mr. Spinks questions at the end of his speech. Mr. Spinks stayed for more than an hour chatting with students and answering their questions.
"Sharing builds me up so that I can say to you that I'll help you like someone once helped me," said Spinks.
