Four intramural coed softball teams are fighting to make it to the championship. This season there are four intramural coed softball teams. The four teams are: Public Safety, Unit F, The Highlight of Our Schedule and The RA's. The Highlight of Our Schedule has lost two games and won none. The RA's and Public Safety both have the record of winning one and losing one, and the Unit F team has two wins and no losses.
"We enjoy each other's company and fellowship out there and just love to have fun," said Ray Bolt, senior sport management and captain of The Highlighters. The Highlighters need the next two wins to compete for the championship. The two teams with the best record play for the championship, while the other two teams play for the consolation game.
With the employment of the new Intramural Sports Coordinator, Jon Phillips, the rules and the teams have experienced a slight change this year. In years past, there has not been a men's league. Previously, only a coed softball league existed, which required two girls on the team with at least one of them on the field at all times. Now, a separate men's league and coed league has been created. The rules for the coed league softball require at least five girls on the field at all times. The batting line up also must have a girl batting every other batter. Not only does every other batter have to be a girl, every batter starts out with one strike and one ball. This rule is to keep the games moving quickly so that one team does not dominate when they are at bat. Pitchers have to pitch between a six and 12-foot arc and if the ball hits home plate, it is a strike.
"It's a fun non-stressful way to hang out with friends at the end of a long school week," said Danielle Emory, senior psychology and a player for the Public Safety team.
There may not be an audience of millions to watch NGU coed intramural softball like there is to watch NCAA March Madness, but it is still a highlight of NGU's Spring semester. For these teams, having fun is the focus. Winning the championship and getting a free T-shirt is just an added bonus to the fun of playing intramural sports.
