The North Greenville University baseball team went 1-4 last week over a span of three days, dropping to 10-33 on the season. This included splitting a doubleheader at Milligan College, being swept in a doubleheader by Tusculum College, and losing at USC-Upstate.
Much like the week before, last week started promising on Tuesday, April 4, by NGU taking the first game of a doubleheader against Milligan. The ball clubs had to go extra frames in the pitchers' duel, and NGU won 1-0 in 10 innings. There were only eight hits between the two teams, but Milligan committed three errors, including a game changer in the top of the 10th inning.
The inning started off with a walk by leftfielder Eric Loy, senior business administration, before second baseman Matt Britt, junior sport management, reached on a fielder's choice, but an error on the play by Milligan catcher Jon Edmonds allowed both runners to reach base safely. The next batter, shortstop Mike Reis, junior Christian studies, laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over to second and third. As Milligan was attempting to intentionally walk third baseman Cardenas, senior international business, Milligan relief pitcher Andrew Klahn threw a wild pitch that allowed Loy to score the game's only run. The Crusaders left the bases loaded on no hits in the inning, but went on to win 1-0.
Defensive woes at the hot corner once again struck NGU, as four errors by Cardenas aided in Milligan scoring all four runs unearned as the Crusaders lost 4-3 in the nightcap of the doubleheader. Milligan's defense was sloppy as well as they had three of their own errors mar their line score. Both pitchers went the distance as pitcher Dylan Davidson, junior sport management, took the loss. Reis went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Cardenas went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the game.
"We just didn't take care of the baseball or swing the stick⦠it's been what has hurt us all year long," said Tim Nihart, head coach.
NGU struggled Wednesday on their trip to Tusculum. In the first game, the Crusaders were all but shut down in a 10-2 loss. A Loy error coupled with three by Reis led to five unearned runs. Starting pitcher Brandon Young, junior marketing, went the distance for NGU, taking the loss. Reis and Cardenas were the only Crusaders to tally hits in the game, as NGU was held to a scant two hits while fanning seven times.
