Basketball season is about to replace football season, as both the men and women's teams have been training and practicing for the upcoming games.
The Lady Crusaders have their first away game at Limestone College today and then they will face Montreat College in the Hayes Gymnasium here at North Greenville on Friday, Nov. 17. The girls have a very young team this year, with seven new players and only one senior, after losing senior Allison Robinson, marketing, to a knee injury the third day of practice. Lady Crusaders' coach Jayne Arledge said she is "very excited about this season, and the team has great potential."
"They are still in the learning process and hopefully they will be able to make it to their fourth year attending Nationals," said Arledge.
Audrey Toscano, junior sport management, Debbie Wyatt, junior international business, and Amanda Milner, sophomore psychology, are showing signs of team leadership, said Arledge. The girls have a competitive schedule this year and will need to take victories home after playing Southern Wesleyan and Emmanuel College if they want to get to Nationals. Coach Arledge has the team working on their defense and practicing drills that focus on perfecting the little things, like protecting the ball, and being smart about when to shoot the ball. Robin Warner, sophomore marketing, feels that the teams needs, "to be consistent, play as a team, and come ready to play every game; if we do those things then we can definitely win Nationals."
"I am looking forward to a great season. I believe that we are capable of having one of the best years ever. If we work hard everyday in practice and play each game to our potential I believe that we can be one of the best. Practices are looking great, but just like many other teams we have many strengths and weaknesses," said Wyatt.
The men's basketball team, which is coached by Chad Lister, will be having their first two home games in Hayes Gymnasium against Wingate College today, and on Monday, Nov. 20, playing Warren Wilson College. The guys also have a tough schedule this year and play numerous teams ranked in the top 25, such as Wingate College, Presbyterian College, and Winthrop University.
"All of our games are going to be tough but our biggest obstacle this season should be ourselves and playing our hardest, but I'm looking forward to a great season since we probably have the most talent on this team than we have had in the previous three years," said Josh Burgess, junior sport management.
