On Saturday Nov. 18, North Greenville University had the unprecedented honor of winning the 2006 Victory Bowl for the National Christian College Athletic Association.
There were two awards given after the game. Running back Matt Moore, junior international business, was named Offensive Player of the game with 172 rushing yards and three touchdowns on seven carries. Defensive end Andre Bernardi, sophomore sport management, was named defensive player of the game with seven total tackles and four sacks for a loss of 28 yards.
The Crusaders started the game strong with an interception by defensive end Derek White, senior sports management, on the first play of the game. This put the ball in the Crusader's hand and led to a six-yard touchdown carry by running back Rashad Cummings, sophomore sport management. The PAT by Adrian Escalona, junior accounting, put the score at 7-0 at the 11:41 mark in the first quarter. The Crusaders shut out the Pioneers for the majority of the first quarter with Moore scoring two times in a row on both possessions. The first touchdown was a 34-yard carry for the fourth and two, and the PAT by Escalona put the score at 14-0 with 6:05 left in the first. Then Moore scored again with a 57-yard carry on the first play of the possession. Escalona made good on the PAT again and gave the Crusaders a 21-point lead over the Pioneers.
The Pioneers finally scored with a three-yard touchdown run from quarterback
Brad Reifsnyder to Sean Knight. The PAT by Mike Skvor finally put the Pioneers on the scoreboard 21-7 with 3:41 left in the first half. With only a minute and a half left in the half, the Crusaders responded with a four-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Eric Moeller, senior mathematics, to Josh Johnson, freshman business administration, who is normally a defensive lineman. The PAT by Escalona put the score at 28-7 for halftime.
The Crusaders were the first to score in the second half with a four-yard touchdown strike from Moeller to wide receiver Brandon Dobbins, freshman business administration. Escalona's PAT was good and it put the score at 35-7 with 10:36 remaining in the third quarter.
