North Greenville University has announced the hiring of Lauren Axson as the new head volleyball coach. Axson brings five years of coaching experience to the Crusader program, including this past year as the head volleyball coach at Southside Christian High School. She replaces Kasey Whitehead, who left after guiding the Crusader program for two years.
"Lauren came by way of a glowing recommendation of an outstanding coach, Greg Mosley, whom she coached under at Southside Christian," said Jan McDonald, NGU Director of Athletics. "She played at Presbyterian College, which has a great volleyball tradition. You add to that her high school and club coaching experience and you have a great hire for North Greenville University."
Prior to Southside Christian, Axson was head volleyball coach at Thornwell Home and School for Children for two years. She also has several years of experience as an assistant volleyball and softball coach at the high school and club levels, including a state volleyball championship at Southside Christian in 2005.
Axson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree on English and Political Science from Presbyterian College in 1999. At PC, Axson played volleyball all four years, while playing softball two years for the Blue Hose. She was named an Academic All-Region volleyball student-athlete four times, and won the team's best defensive player and Captain's Award her senior season. As a sophomore, Axson was co-captain of the softball team, and won the Scotsman Award for a balance between academics and athletics.
Upon graduation from Presbyterian, Axson spent several years teaching and coaching in the high school ranks. Then, in July 2002, she moved to Budapest, Hungary as a Journeyman with the International Mission Board. Axson moved back to the Greenville area in August 2005.
"One of my greatest passions in life is to develop and build up athletes both competitively and spiritually," said Axson. "I am extremely excited about the opportunity to do both at North Greenville. This team is filled with good athletes, and if we keep our focus on the Lord and on increasing each player's skill level and playing ability, we will be successful both on and off the court."
