Unlike the typical job where one goes into work between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and works until 5 p.m., Campus Security is always on the clock, day and night, including holidays. Anything from helping students get cars started when the battery dies, to letting students in dorms when keys are forgotten, calling medical personnel when someone needs medical attention, and protecting students and faculty while they go about a typical day.
Some students hold the illusion that Campus Security employees are out to get everyone and ticket every car they see. This is not the case. The goal of Campus Security is to protect the faculty, staff and students.
"I enjoy working with the people and the students," said Wes Townsend.
Campus Security is a behind the scenes group of people. A usual, day shift starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. and the staff does everything from shuttling people to and from dorms to picking up the mail from the Tigerville post office. The second shift starts at 3 p.m. and ends at 11 p.m. and the next shift comes in at 11 and works until 7 a.m. and the staff patrols at night and locks up buildings and works gate checks beginning at 12 a.m. until on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends.
If a threatening emergency happens on campus, Campus Security is the first line of defense, protecting the students until county arrives to take over the emergency. This group of dedicated and loyal people is ready and willing to help; just call 977-7777 and Campus Security is on their way to help.
"I desire to work with people and students and I enjoy security work," said Townsend.
