Steady rain didn't stop the over 70,000 zealous football fans from packing Dolphin Stadium in Miami, Fla. to watch Super Bowl XLI, the most anticipated game of the season.
The Indianapolis Colts (16-4) clenched their first title since 1970 when they defeated the Chicago Bears (15-4), with a victorious 29-17 score.
The first half was a messy one, consisting of six turnovers (three for each team).
Chicago was the first to put points on the board. The opening kick was an exciting one for the Bears as defensive back Devin Hester defensive back took off into the endzone for a 92-yard kick return. The Robbie Gould kick was good, generating the 7-0 lead 14 seconds into the first quarter.
Several minutes later, the Colts responded with a 53-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Manning to wide receiver Reggie Wayne. Indianapolis holder Hunter Smith mishandled the snap on the extra point, leaving the score at 7-6.
After recovering a fumble by Joseph Addai, Chicago responded with a 52-yard run by running back Thomas Jones, which set up a four-yard touchdown pass from Rex Grossman to Mushin Muhammad. Another good Gould kick landed the Bears a seeming comfortable 14-6 lead.
The Colts defense then decided to show up, and held the Bears scoreless until late in the third quarter.
Vinatieri redeemed himself early in the second quarter with a 29-yard field goal. He later nailed the extra point after a short Dominic Rhodes touchdown run. However, the usually accurate Vinatieri missed a 32-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the first half. The Colts went into the locker room with the slight 16-14 lead.
Indy received the ball first in the second half, and kept the ball for the first 7:34 of the third quarter. The drive was capped off by another Vinatieri 24-yard field goal, which gave the Colts a 19-14 lead. After a Chicago punt, Vinatieri continued to prove himself as he clasped another field goal from 20 yards. Indianapolis improved to 22-14.
