The North Greenville women's basketball team took off quickly their game Saturday, Feb. 3 against the Voorhees Lady Tigers as guard Alexus Robinson, senior accounting, placed the Crusaders first on the board with her basket 20 seconds into the first period. Guard Eboni Davis, freshman biology, quickly added four points putting the Crusaders ahead 6-0, but the Tigers wouldn't stay off the board for long.
The tables turned as the Lady Tigers hastily racked up 11 points from guard/forward Tammy Harbin, guard Easnasha Houston and forward Antinesha Wyatt, leaving the Crusaders trailing 11-6.
"During the first timeout Coach really emphasized defense and rebounding. Defense is one of our strengths as a team and rebounding is a big key to defense," said guard Mindy Greenstone, sophomore early childhood education.
The Crusaders made quite a comeback as guard Nikki Wood, freshman interdisciplinary studies, scored nine points along with forward Debbie Wyatt's, senior sport management, additional seven points. Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers lagged behind as Harbin scored a three-pointer and Rhadja Page posted seven more points. North Greenville led the game 39-24 at halftime.
"No one player stood out... The entire team played as one, which shows the chemistry of our team," said Greenstone.
NGU continued to hold their lead throughout the second half. Guard/forward Audrey Toscano, junior international business, and forward Samantha Frost, freshman interdisciplinary studies, each recorded seven points along with Greenstone's six additional points. The Tigers desperately tried to catch up as Harbin led the scoring with 14 points as Houston scored six. However, the Lady Crusaders defeated Voorhees 79-57. The sixth consecutive win advances the Crusaders' record to 12-9.
"From where we were in the first half of the season we have come a long way. You can just call us butter because we're on a roll," said Greenstone.
