Now that the Valentine's Day holiday is over, and probably forgotten by some, one thing that we shouldn't forget and fail to recognize is that this is still Black History Month.

We often look at Valentine's Day as being the significant thing about the month of February, but it is not the only thing we should recognize. Giving and receiving gifts for the ones we care about is important, but learning about, and remembering people from the past is important as well. I know we've all heard the phrase, "Those who don't learn their history will some day repeat it." Throughout time that statement has proven itself as being very accurate.

I don't know about others, but as for myself; I love to learn about various subjects. I love to expand my knowledge on not only my own culture and ethnic background, but of other cultures and other ethnic backgrounds as well.

I guess you could say that I am an open-minded person. As an open-minded individual, I truly believe that February/Black History Month is a month that should always be remembered.

A while ago I heard a saying, "The past is history, the future is a mystery, but the present is a gift." So why not take that gift, and learn from the past, as we live in the present, and plan for the future? For if it wasn't for some of the sacrifices made by those in the past, this very nation in which we all live may not be the nation that it is now.

So now that the Valentine's Day holiday is over, and is soon to be forgotten until next year, the significance of the month still remains. Though the month of February is rapidly coming to an end, the memory of those who once lived and gave so much should never be forgotten.
