The baseball team had an extremely hard week, losing all three games they played, rounding out the week with a record of 3-8. Starting the week off against Carson-Newman at home, the Crusaders had a hard lost at home on Wednesday, Feb. 14.
"We learned a lot about the tempo and pace of the game at this level. It was good to go ahead and get those crazy games done early and move on with the season," said head coach Tim Nihart.
Devin Vance, junior business administration, started the game pitching, and Dylan Davidson, senior sport management, relieved Vance in the fifth inning to finish the game with a score of 4-3 for a Carson-Newman win.
The team then traveled to Georgia State University for a weekend of baseball. On Friday, Feb. 16, Bruce Whitehead, freshman undecided, pitched over five innings, but the team could never get that first run, with a score of 9-0, and the Crusaders dropped their first game to the Bobcats of the weekend.
On Saturday, Feb. 17, North Greenville played a doubleheader against Georgia State and lost both games by scores of 19-2 and 7-1. In the first match-up of the day, sophomore pitcher and outfielder, Brett Hamilton, senior mathematics, started out the game and was relieved by sophomore outfielder, Grayson Smith, sophomore undecided, pitcher Nick Duffey, junior interdisciplinary studies, and then freshman pitcher, Derek Goodyear, sophomore economics.
Davidson took the mound first in the second game, and was then substituted out for Vance, and pitcher Tommy Okano, senior sport management. Mike Reis, senior Christian studies, hit a homerun that put the Crusaders on the scoreboard, but North Greenville's defense just could not match up to the Bobcats' heavy hitters.
"We made a lot of mistakes this past week and the team didn't feel like they gave themselves a fair shake to do positive things over the weekend. It really took our momentum away and we are just ready to start a new beginning with several homes games coming up this week," said Nihart.
The Crusaders go on to play a doubleheader today at home against Mars Hill College at 1 p.m., and also play Fairmont State University Friday and Saturday in three games.
