Things are heating up on the intramural soccer court. This week is the last week for regular season games and the final chance for the teams to make it to the top four playoff spots. In the competitive league, Gremio holds the top seed with 4-0 record. Power Guidos and Mean Machine are tied for the second seed with a record of 3-1. The last spot will fall to Alizee, NG United, Die Kobolde or La Zurra. All four teams are tied with 2-2 records.
The much-anticipated game between the two undefeated recreational teams, Tigerville FC and The Geezers, occurred last Thursday, Feb. 15. The Geezers are an almost entirely faculty comprised team with the exception of Dr. Curtis Horn's son. They are the first faculty team to play intramural sports at North Greenville.
"I think students are just afraid we will not be as objective when grading their assignments," said Dr. Adrian Pater, Christian studies professor, as he jokingly reflects on his team's undefeated record going in to Thursday's game.
Unfortunately for the Geezers, Dr. Pater's motivational drink of choice, Mountain Dew, otherwise known as "Pater-ade," was not sufficient firepower to defeat Tigerville FC and The Geezers fell into second place with a record of 2-1 while Tigerville FC improved to 3-0.
The playoffs for both leagues begin Monday, Feb. 26 at 9 p.m. and the championship games will be played on Thursday, March 1. With six teams in the competitive league battling for the second through fourth spots it will be interesting to see who will actually make it into the playoffs and if anyone will be able to dethrone team Gremio from their number one spot and undefeated status.
