T. Elizabeth Renich combines romance and war in a wonderful series of adventure, love and truth in the books Word of Honor, Matter of Trust, Not Without Courage and Strength and Glory. These novels tell the story of a confederate family in the Civil War. The main character is a beautiful southern girl, Salina, who enraptures the readers' hearts with her beauty and character. She portrays gentleness and wit in an alluring combination.

As I read the first book, I immediately fell in love with the character of Salina as she displays a trustworthy and adventurous personality. Her father trusts her with the information of his involvement in the Network, a group that spies for the South. Salina has one brother who longs to fight for the cause with everyone else, but Ethan has promised his father that he will stay and watch over the women. Salina's father asked Ethan to make the promise in order to protect him since he himself is a captain and knows that the North will be watching his family more closely than others. When Captain Hastings needs more help in the Network, he turns to Salina, who possesses her father's enthusiasm for adventure. Her loyalty and femininity make her an excellent candidate.

As she becomes involved, she discovers that her recently returned friend Jeremy also works with her father. Jeremy and Salina had talked and played together when they were younger and begin to get reacquainted. Salina receives for her 16th birthday a special doll that contains important papers that must not fall into the wrong hands. Her cousin Lottie becomes jealous and tries trickery to get Jeremy.

When I read about Lottie's deceit and evilness, I became outraged and frustrated with the situation. The enemy captures Salina and places her in a notoriously cruel prison. The series captures the pain of jealousy, the joy of truth, the importance of trust, the devastations of war and the strength of God. I enjoyed reading this series when I was younger so much so that I decided to reread them this year. These books provide an interesting perspective on the Civil War as well as an appealing approach to real life struggles with war and love. All the books are now available at CrossWay Bookstores.
