North Greenville has a free tutoring program to ensure an excellent education for all its students.

A student who is struggling to understand any class has the opportunity to talk to the teacher or Chris Haines, Career Services coordinator, and to request a tutor.

The teacher has the responsibility to inform Haines about the student's request in order to work out a tutor for the struggling student.

"The professor refers the student to me, along with recommending a person in that class to be the tutor," said Haines.

The tutor has the opportunity to help a fellow student, as well as get paid by NGU for his services. The tutor also has the freedom to explain and to work with the student in whatever way best helps the student learn and understand the information better.

Haley Gambrell, senior English, had the opportunity to tutor a student in Advanced Grammar throughout the fall of 2005. Gambrell had taken Advanced Grammar as a freshman and had done very well.

The teacher knew both Gambrell and the student needing help and recommended Gambrell as a tutor for the student.

As Gambrell worked with the girl the rest of the fall semester from September to December, they grew to become close friends when they may never have met any other way.

In order to help the student, Gambrell went over the first test with her, and they made flash cards together. Gambrell explained the material in a new way to help the student understand. The student's grades and understanding improved greatly under the focused attention of a tutor.

"In just about every area there's someone who can help if they're [the students are] having a problem," said Gambrell.
