The North Greenville baseball team played host to the Fairmont State University Falcons on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24. They finished off their weekend with one win on Friday and two losses on Saturday, making their record 6-10.
To start the weekend the Crusaders played their first game against the Falcons this season. NGU took the victory 11-1, as pitcher Dylan Davidson, senior sport management, struck out six batters in seven innings. Mike Reis, senior Christian studies, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Chris Tate, senior mathematics, and Kyle Baron, senior history, each added two RBIs to the Crusader scoreboard.
"Friday was the epitome of a team win. We played solid defense, the pitching was on point, and we pretty much drilled the baseball," said Tate.
Fairmont came back and beat them in their first game on Saturday, 1-0. Although Devin Vance, junior business administration, struck out 12 in seven innings, he took the loss. Tate and Rick Broadway, senior sport management, each recorded hits for the Crusaders.
"I wish we could have given Devin some runs to work with because he pitched a great game and deserved a win for the performance that he displayed," said Cory Hinton, sophomore business administration.
The Crusaders weren't able to make a comeback in their second game, taking a 4-3 loss. Bruce Whitehead, freshman undecided, pitched the latter game in the double header. Tate scored NGU's first run on a fielder's choice putting NGU on the board. Matt Britt, senior sport management, made a sacrifice fly to left field, and plated Hinton tying the game 2-2. FSU scored again, but Curt Marshall, junior elementary education, answered when he hit a single bringing home Reis. The Falcons scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.
"The one thing I would change about Saturday would be our sense of urgency. We didn't really have it because we knew we were better. We learned that you can never assume victory. Wins happen on the field," said Tate.
While the Crusaders have learned their lesson the hard way, they're not going to let it get the best of them.
"The rest of the season will take care of itself. We will continue to play as a team and do our best. This is the first time, in a few seasons, that North Greenville Baseball has come together and played as one. We just enjoy playing with one another," said Derek Goodyear, sophomore economics.
The Crusaders will host Lincoln Memorial today at 1 p.m. before traveling to Brevard College for games on Friday, March 2 and Saturday, March 3.
