On behalf of the music students and many other students who attended the Parrini Recital cultural event last Thursday night, I would like to say that I am appalled at the disrespect of some members of this student body. Some of us had been looking forward to the concert for many weeks but were not able to enjoy it as we should have because of all the noise around us.
You would think that college students would be able to sit for just over an hour and politely listen to an amazing concert, but I guess some cannot. I heard a cell phone go off in the middle of a piece, loud laughing and talking during a piece and someone even saying "Hurry up" when the performers came back from an intermission. Some students may not be used to going to events where proper etiquette is required, but everyone should be familiar with common courtesy. Even if you don't like classical music, you can at least appreciate it, and more than that, you can respect those around you who do.
If you went to a movie that you really wanted to see and the people around you talked the whole time, you would be very upset. Why is a cultural event any different?
I felt embarrassed that such high caliber musicians received such disrespect. Students were not the only people in attendance. Family members of the performers and other outside guests were there, and it is a shame that they were not able to enjoy themselves as much as they should have been able to. It is an embarrassment that these students are representing North Greenville University. If you cannot sit still and quiet at a musical event, then go to an art gallery or an etiquette dinner, but please do not disrupt the beautiful art of music if you come to any concert. For those of you who were there but did not respect the music, you missed an incredible recital with two very talented musicians. Next time, just don't bother coming.
