By next year, Turner Chapel will be able to seat 350 more students due to new seats that will be installed over the summer. The chapel currently fits about 1,500 students but seating will be 1,900 after the change.
More seats will not mean loss of comfort or room though. Steve Crouse, vice president for Campus Ministries, said he has sat in the new chapel seats.
"I think they will actually be more comfortable than the old ones," said Crouse.
The reason Crouse said more seats fit in the same amount of room and still not lose leg room is because once the new seats are put in there will be an extra two inches between rows and those extra two inches multiplied by all the rows in the chapel will be able to yield more seats.
Another renovation that is going to be done by next year is the installation of a new digital sound board with better sound capabilities and will free up more space for seats because it is smaller and more compact. The video infrastructure will also be upgraded which will provide a better image on the projection screens and smoother transitions.
These renovations are scheduled to start in May after the graduation ceremony and to be completed the first week of June before Centrifuge starts. This is because there is more time between May and Centrifuge than there is between Centrifuge and August when school commences.
Crouse is hoping that 1,900 seats will be able to last at least two to three years before the folding chairs in the aisles will have to be used again. Students in the aisle can now take hope that next year there will be a new comfortable chapel seat awaiting them.
