The Mountain Laurel, North Greenville's literary and art journal, features submitted artwork, poetry and prose from students and a new edition is published and free to the student body every year.

The Mountain Laurel's editor in chief, Kelly Prewitt, senior English, works alongside six other volunteer staff members this year. Susan Phillips and Dr. Deborah DeCiantis are the staff advisors for the publication and help organize and encourage the devoted students.

Prewitt said that although being editor of the journal is a fun experience, putting it together is no easy task. The students have to edit all the works, organize the magazine, layout the pages and meet all the deadlines on time. Luckily, everyone pitches in and shares the load with each other to make sure the job gets done.

"As far as layout goes, everyone works on that; it is a collaborative effort. The most difficult task, in my opinion, is the fundraising aspect. However, layout is demanding and tedious," said Prewitt.

Although the journal has been considered an English or Mass Communications practicum course for the past several years, this year it was created by volunteer students on an extra-curricular basis. However, this coming fall semester, it is scheduled on the course list for students to get hourly credit.

Along with putting the journal together, the Mountain Laurel staff has also been planning an awards reception to honor students who have exceptional works being published. Professionals judged the best submissions in visual art, poetry, fiction and literary nonfiction.

On April 20, Dr. Jimmy Epting, Dr. Don Dowless and other faculty members will attend a reception in the Hayes Ministry Center, where these students will receive recognition for their work, along with a small cash prize.

This awards ceremony will honor several students. Michael Craft, senior English, will receive first place in fiction for Tates Metallic, second place in fiction for Roadside Dogs, and first place in poetry for Eitherglide. Craft will also be awarded third place in poetry for Lower 48, and first place in nonfiction for Baptism. Stephen Palacino, sophomore interdisciplinary studies, will receive second place in nonfiction for Remembrance. Prewitt will be awarded third place in fiction for Eli, and Katie Player, junior English, will receive second place in poetry for Above the Aisle. Faith Tinnin, senior English, and Tammy James, senior sport management, will both receive honorable mentions for their poetry.
