Monday March 26, the Crusader golf team played in the J. Ralph Hargett Invitational, in Charlotte, N.C.
"We did not play well today, but are still in first place, and since we are usually better on the second day we hope to blow them out of the water tomorrow, pull out a second victory for the semester, and be on our way to regionals," said Blake Hoover, junior sport management.
The team shot a 304 with Cole West, senior business administration, and Brandon Coggins, freshman elementary education, leading the team with scores of 73 and 74, respectively.
The team is strong and has demonstrated its abilities already this school year. In the fall, NGU placed fourth at the Anderson University Invitational and eighth at nationals. Both Hoover and Nate Irvin, freshman broadcast media, also had rather impressive scores in the fall. Irvin placed second at the AU invitational. He also placed third at the Montreat Fall Invitational while Hoover took home the first place title for shooting a 72-73-145, and claiming second for the overall team placement.
As for this semester, the team got off to a slow start. Their first match for the spring season proved to be rather disappointing as they finished tenth at the Presbyterian College Intercollegiate.
The Upstate Collegiate Invitational in Easley, S.C., would be the team's next challenge. Their first round started off a bit rocky with a few uncharacteristically high scores on Monday. Fear of a repeat of the previous week's play, the team knew they had to step it up. They came back on Tuesday to not only clench first, but Coggins won the individual honors with a score of 73-78-151. This victory served as a catalyst, shooting the Crusaders into their most recent conquest.
Over spring break, the team played in the Richard Rendleman Invitational. Their first day of play was again not so great. The team was in sixteenth place after the first round. However, not even those odds were enough to hold back NGU. The Crusaders came back on Tuesday to shoot a five-under round of 279 and tie for second place. Irvin shot 78-66-144 and tied for fourth place overall. Also on Tuesday, Hoover shot a 68, West had a 72 and Coggins a 73.
"I played well, but I was more excited to see how we as a team put it all together that day. I was proud of how the team played, I knew we had it in us," said Irvin.
With more tournaments like this and a victory in Charlotte, the team will be well on their way to the NCAA regional championships, which would only be the second time in school history that the NGU golf team has ever made it that far.
