The library is usually seen as a place where students visit the night before a major paper is due or when a printer is needed. But what goes on behind the scenes that keeps the Hester Memorial Library running smoothly?
Nate Malone, part of the full time day shift staff, starts his day off opening up the library at 8 a.m. He opens up the Miller Bible Museum, unlocks doors, makes sure books are stocked and everything is put up from the night before, stamps the newspapers that come in everyday with a North Greenville label, turns on the computers and makes sure the printers have paper in them and that is just within the first hour of opening the library. The rest of the day shift is making sure books are stocked, work study students come in on time, checking out books, making sure the library is quiet so students can work, and helping students find books and research materials.
Many students enjoy working in the library because of the quiet working environment. Work study students help make the smoothness of the library possible coming in at all hours of the day and working eight hours a week.
"I get to meet and know students I wouldn't have otherwise," said Mandee Orrell, senior Christian studies.
Throughout the day books are checked back in and put back on shelves. At 4:30 p.m. Malone gets off work and David Roberts comes in to work the night shift, along with several work study students, until 11:30, when the library closes. Jamie Morris, senior psychology, one of the many work study students, and "enjoys interacting with people." At 11:20 p.m., right before the library closes, the staff flip the lights on and off to let people know they are closing in 10 minutes and to start packing up their stuff. After everyone is cleared out, the computers turned off and everybody has left for the evening the doors are locked and the staff goes home to get some much needed rest.
"I enjoy that I don't have to drive off campus to work. And it's not stressful," said work study Graham Ward, senior print media. So next time you go to the library remember the staff is there to keep things in working order so your visit is a pleasant one.
