Baseball goes 2-2, sweeps Chowan Saturday

The North Greenville baseball team went into each of their games last week against USC Aiken and Chowan College with high hopes of advancing their losing record of 13-21. The Crusaders started off their week as they traveled on Wednesday, March 28 to play the USC Aiken Pacers.
USC Aiken leaped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back as they dominated NGU and finished with a 17-4 victory.
"The sun don't shine on the same dog everyday," said Cory Hinton, sophomore business administration.
Hinton singled to center field with two outs to score Chris Tate, senior mathematics, from second base, making it 12-2 in the sixth inning. Hinton finished with two of the team's eight hits while Tate was 1-for-3 with one RBI, one run scored and two walks. Curt Marshall, junior elementary education, had a 2-for-5 night with one RBI and one run scored.
Bruce Whitehead, freshman undecided, gave up seven runs on seven hits and three walks in four innings taking the loss for North Greenville.
"You have to play to the best of your ability no matter what the outcome is at the end of a play or at the end of the game," said John Porter, sophomore sport management.
On Friday, March 30, North Greenville hosted the Chowan College Hawks. Heading into the top of the eighth inning NGU led 3-2, but two errors cost them as Chowan scored six runs. North Greenville answered with one run in the ninth, but it was not enough as the Hawks defeated them, 7-4.
"We lost our focus for just a second and it ended up losing us the ballgame," said Hinton.
Mike Reis, senior Christian studies, led NGU as he batted 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Matt Britt, senior sport management, went 4-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Hinton went three for four with a run scored, and Rick Broadway, senior sport management, batted one run in and scored twice on a 2-for-4 day.
"We will continue to battle at the plate and defensively. I look forward to more than 21 wins. We still have a lot more baseball to play," said Porter.
After suffering two losses, the Crusaders had enough as they swept Chowan College in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31. NGU took the first game 3-2 after two extra innings, and won the second game 8-7 on a Curt Marshall two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning.
In game one, Grayson Smith, sophomore undecided, pitched a complete game, striking out two batters while surrendering nine hits in the win. Marshall led the way for the Crusaders as he batted 4-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Hinton and Tyler Callicutt, freshman undecided, each added a hit and an RBI, while Reis had a single hit and scored one run.
