Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if no one ever laughed? What if individuals always presented themselves to appear as being miserable, depressed and angry; would that not make this world dark and bleak? Even on sunny days this world would still look and feel gloomy. There would be absolutely no laughter anywhere, not even on television.
Last Wednesday, March 28, we had a humorous speaker come and speak in Chapel. Along with many of the other students, I too laughed. I laughed, not only because I thought that the things he was saying were funny, but also because I love to laugh. Yet, I did observe some students who did not laugh at anything that was said throughout the entire Chapel service.
Then I sat there and wondered what does it take to make some people laugh? Do they even have a sense of humor? If someone walked up the aisle and tickled them, would they still not laugh?
A lot of people would feel a whole lot better if they would just loosen up and laugh for a bit. When I am down and stressed out, laughter helps to get me into a better mood and relieves most of my tension. I also take pleasure in making others laugh as well. Seeing other people laugh makes me feel as wonderful as laughing myself.
As we sat in last Wednesday's chapel service, I was glad to see someone other than I take great joy in making others laugh and have fun. One person commented that the speaker was goofy, and didn't laugh at anything that he said or did, and that to me was sad. How can we go through life without laughter?
Some people have commented to me that they never see me smile or laugh, and I wonder where in the world they have been because that is one of my favorite. I guess that's why last Wednesday's chapel service was one of my most favorite of all. Proverbs 17:22 says, "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones."
I have found that most of the time laughter brings on cheerfulness, and as I left chapel last Wednesday I felt more cheerful than I had all week. Yes, I do know when to be serious and that there is a time for all things, and no, I don't laugh at everything, for example filthy jokes; however, when some good clean humor comes along and the opportunity comes for me to laugh I will do so. I don't consider myself goofy because I love to joke and laugh, I consider myself a person who knows what it means to unwind and relax and just have fun. My motto is a laugh a day may keep grouchiness away, and it never hurts to laugh.
