Roman Holiday
Audrey Hepburn set the standard for the ladies of Hollywood in the 50s and 60s that still stands firm today. All of her films are moving and memorable with charm and class that only Hepburn can bring to them.
Roman Holiday(1953) is in one of her most recognized films where she delivered an Oscar-winning performance.
Roman Holiday is a romantic comedy about a much-sheltered princess, Ann, who is suffering from severe boredom on her goodwill tour around Europe.
She greatly desires to live a normal life where she can where "pajamas" to bed rather then fancy nightgowns.
During her stay in Rome, Italy, Ann takes it upon her self to steal away from her stifling, controlling schedule and tour Rome on her on terms. Thus begins the adventures of her Roman Holiday. The Princess falls into company with a handsome American newspaperman (Gregory Peck) who, with the help of a friend, is able to provide her with the holiday of a lifetime.
The story goes deeper than just a fairy-tale of love and adventure; it follows the life of a spoiled young girl who comes to grips with the reality of her responsibilities. It reveals that friendships can make all the difference when it comes to making the right decisions.
The movie was filmed entirely on location in Rome, Italy, so the it is worth the viewing for not only the acting and story but the sites and scenes as well. When it comes to old black and white movies, this one should be at the top of everyone's list of favorites. Bring back the classics and rent Roman Holiday, perfect for a ladies night or date night.
An Affair to Remember
It's the perfect love story: boy meets girl, they fall in love and after some bumps along the way they live happily ever after; although familiar, this story will never grow old. The 1957 classic Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr masterpiece An Affair to Remember is a perfect example of a simple love story, still a favorite after 50 years.
The movie may be easily recognized because of the many references to it in the popular Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan film Sleepless in Seattle. To experience the wonder of An Affair to Remember it must be seen in its entirety.
The first half of the movie takes place on a ship bound for New York City. The handsome artist Nickie Ferrante (Cary Grant), who is always in the
spotlight while living the life of luxury, is engaged to a woman of high society.
Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr) is a want-to-be singer engaged to a man who seems to be "the perfect husband." The attraction between the two opposites is unmistakable from the moment they meet. The friendship they build on their journey across the sea takes them both by surprise.
Upon arriving in New York they agree to reunite after six months to see if
their love will stand the test of time.
The film perfectly portrays love coming when least expected. Unlike how today's movies would portray an affair, the relationship built between the characters is innocent and sweet; they are respectful to each other and their future spouses.
An Affair to Remember was nominated for four Academy Awards: Best
Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Song. It is
considered a drama/romance and has a running time of 119 minutes.
