Furman University's Timmons Arena hosted the Portable Sounds Tour last Thursday, March 29 that featured Family Force 5, Building 429, Thousand Foot Krutch and Tobymac.
Family Force 5 (FF5), a fairly unknown band from Atlanta, "combin[es] OutKast with Rage Against the Machine and Beastie Boys with the White Stripes," according to the band Web site. The band is made up of three brothers - Solomon, Jacob and Joshua Olds - and two friends - Nathan Currin and Brad Allen. FF5 opened up the show with three songs and are currently on tour to promote their album Business Up Front/Party in the Back.
Building429 was a step back from the style of FF5. They played "Never Let Go" and "Glory Defined." The band took the name Building429 from Ephesians 4:29. The verse says "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths except that which is helpful for 'building' others up according to their needs so that it may benefit those who listen." They are currently promoting the release of Iris to Iris, due out on May 1.
Thousand Foot Krutch (TFK) is a band from Ontario, Canada. TFK ended their set list with the radio hits "Rawkfist" and "Absolute." Fans are currently anticipating a new studio album, The Flame in All of Us, due out in 2007.
Tobymac made over 4,000 people come alive with old songs such as "Jesus Freak" and new songs from his album, Portable Sounds including "Made to Love." Portable Sounds was released Feb. 20 and sold 51,000 records in the first week. Tobymac is a former member of the band dc Talk.
The show ended with an encore from Tobymac and an autograph signing by all bands.
"Building429 and Tobymac were the highlights of the night for me," said Brittany Dail, freshman biology. "Not only did they put on awesome concerts, but they gave all the glory to God for what they did."
"The concert rocked, and the fact that so many of the artists gave all the praise to God made it really awesome," said Chasity Adams, sophomore early childhood education.
