With the arrival of spring and summer, naturally colored skin is for winter and being a bronzed beauty is the thing to do. In the fast-paced world of today, it is much easier to just lay in an indoor tanning facility for 20 minutes, than to sit outside for hours upon hours and soak up the sun. The only problem with receiving a tan is that research has proven that any and all methods for tanning may cause skin cancer. Though there is no safe way to tan, steps can be taken to help in the prevention of cancer. So before deciding to "fake-n-bake" or lay out in the sun remember there are different options or if someone is a die-hard tanner, follow these safety precautions.

According to popular belief, sunless tanning lotion turns a person's skin orange. That little bit of knowledge is actually false. Though the lotions of the past have turned people orange, a lot of times it's the improper use of the lotions that actually make a person appear orange. Not to mention that in recent years the formula has been changed for them.

"The chemical, upon oxidation, works with the top layer of your skin cells to turn a tannish color. They're much better than the old creams that used to turn people orange," said Dr. Lynn Cornelius from wftv.com. When using a tanning cream, do not purchase the cheap ones, try Coppertone or L'Oreal. After applying, wash the palm of the hand and in between the fingers very well. Be sure when applying to the back of the leg and heel to rub the lotion all the way into the skin, this helps in avoiding an uneven tan. The new tan comes to life on the skin almost immediately after application.

Not confident enough in yourself for a sunless tanning lotion? In recent years, the new spray on tan has emerged. Before going, take a hot shower and use an exfoliator with the shower gel, this helps to remove all excess or dead skin. After being sprayed be sure to rub is all into the skin. For a one time spray on tan, the cost is a little under $30 and the tan last for up to two weeks. The spray on tan is available at any Ultra Tan in the Greenville area.
