Bethany Dillon returns with her third studio album, Waking Up. It is the follow up to her 2005 CD Imagination. The 18-year-old is a native of Bellefontaine, Ohio.
The album displays Dillon's maturity in her faith and her music. On a recent mission trip to India Dillon said, "I feel like God is widening my eyes as I'm walking in this new season." "Beggar's Heart" was a song inspired by this trip.
Unlike her previous albums, Dillon's new music is not just acoustically driven, but piano accompaniments are in songs "Come Find Me" and "Let Your Light Shine."
The CD opens up with the first radio single, "The Kingdom." This is the typical radio song, upbeat with a catchy chorus. The self-titled song "Waking Up" shows Dillon's vulnerability in the lyrics, "The more I fight it, the more I love You. And my eyes widen, I have to tell you there's nothing like waking up, waking up to You…" and "So in every language, from every hurt, we echo affection back to You, Lord."
"[The album] Waking Up is the most joyful record I've made," Dillon explains, "Even though it revolves around themes of brokenness and this feeling of being really small in the presence of God, I think this is the freest sounding project I've created."
Dillon's Web site (www.bethanydillon.com) says, "[The songs] coming from a place of personal weakness and hope that she willingly lives in, in increasing measure. For Bethany, there's no such thing as an easy song. All of them are hard earned, and fraught with wonder and meaning."
In addition to Waking Up, Dillon has also contributed to two recent movie albums, including singing "All Creatures of Our God and King" with Shawn McDonald on Music Inspired by the Motion Picture Amazing Grace, and contributes to the Bridge to Terabithia original soundtrack.
Dillon is set to embark on her first headlining tour starting Thursday, April 12 in Missouri.
