President Jimmy Epting's daughter Daphne Weyand is planning to run the 26-mile Boston Marathon on April 16 after having her baby Mallory Weyand only December of last year.
Weyand ran until she was seven and a half months pregnant with her doctor's approval as long as she felt no discomfort or pain, and when she stopped running she speed walked five miles a day, until she had the baby on December 18, 2006. Just a mere two weeks after she had her baby she began marathon training for the Boston Marathon, running about 50-60 miles a week.
She is confident about the upcoming marathon and says her having the baby has not hindered her running in any way, except the fact that she had to get her body back in shape after not running in so long. In February, she ran a qualifying marathon in Myrtle Beach, which was her first marathon, and her final time was three hours and 29 minutes, so she feels ready for Boston.
When asked her reasons for attempting such a grueling race and her dedication to running even while pregnant, Weyand said, "I'm always looking for a challenge and I want to run the Boston Marathon to prove myself."
Her family is supportive of her running endeavors and amazed at her incredible will and determination.
"I'm definitely proud of her, and actually I'm amazed that after having a baby in December, she's able to train and be physically fit enough to run a marathon. She has always been very tough though, physically and mentally, so it doesn't surprise me," said Paul Epting, senior interdisciplinary studies.
"I'm thrilled to death," said Dr. Epting.
Weyand may also be teaching First Year Experience here at North Greenville again next fall. She taught it before last fall and says there is a big chance that she may teach again at the school.
