Can you be trusted? Can I be trusted? Can anyone be trusted? What exactly is trust? According to the Encarta Dictionary, the definition of trust is "confidence in and reliance on good qualities, especially fairness, truth, honor or ability."

I remember as a little girl, when one summer morning my mother and I were taking a walk to the store, she was talking to me about trust. She told me to not put much trust in people, but to put my trust in the Lord. I then remember asking her if I could trust her, and she said, "No, don't even trust me." Yet, I knew that I could trust her, she was my mother and I knew she would never do anything to hurt me or put my life in jeopardy, her response to my question was to support the statement she had just made and I understood that.

As I got older and began growing into the person that I am today, I have realized that what my mother had said was right; trust really cannot be put into many people. Everyday all over the world we hear of people being killed by those whom they had placed their trust, whether it was a lover, a spouse, a child, a parent or a friend. They thought that they could trust these people because they were those closest to them. Yet, evidently we find that even those that are closest to us sometimes cannot be trusted.

As sad as it is, we still have hope. As my mom told me several years ago, we can put our trust in the Lord, and from knowing that He never changes we can always have confidence in trusting Him. In Deuteronomy 31: 8 it says, "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." This is a very encouraging verse, one that most of us have all heard from time to time again.

Though it seems hard to trust people and even God at times, we know that we must. In order to live in this world there will be times that we will have to put at least some measure of trust in a person, and in order for us to be used and blessed by God, then we must always try our best to put our trust in Him. I know that there takes trust to have friendships, relationships, and marriages, but our trust must first begin with the Lord in order for these relationships to be successful. As my mother was teaching me a valuable lesson that summer morning, she too knew and still knows that trust must be placed with people at times. However, the ultimate conclusion she wanted me to have and always have was to always rely on God for all things.

Whenever I am discouraged or would like to see a change of circumstance in my life, still to this very day my mother will often remind me to place my trust in God. As the years go by and times begin to change more rapidly and continually, I know that putting our trust in the Lord is the one and only reassuring thing we can do. For if friends and family fail us, we can always be sure that the Lord Jesus Christ will never fail us, because He is the same today, yesterday and forever more.
