Intramural basketball is well underway only a couple of weeks into the Spring semester.
Over 50 students were in the stands of Hayes Gymnasium cheering for their favorite teams as the season started Jan. 21.
This semester there are 12 men's teams, with the Wolverines, the Unknowns, B-Team, Hogan's Heroes, MacGyver's, Bragg, the Upsetters, Gooch's, Red Foxes, Size, Scrubs and X competing. This means 100-120 guys are involved in men's basketball.
The teams are separated into two leagues, competitive and recreational.
"Splitting the men up into two leagues helps keep the levels of competition and participation up." Donald Lily, Intramural Coordinator, said.
Women's intramural basketball has definitely picked up the pace this spring; the number of women's teams tripled since last spring, with Rainbow Ponies, Foxy Browns, Blaze, Bottom Simpson and Emily's Team competing.
"I'm really excited about the number of women that wanted to play this semester, and the number of students that are showing up to watch the women's games," Lilly said.
"Last Tuesday night was actually my first time playing in an organized basketball game," Sarah Slice, sophomore elementary education, who plays for S Club 7, said.
"Even though we lost, and I got hit in nose with the basketball, it was still a lot of fun and it surprised me how talented some of the other players are."
Strong student involvement shows that many students at North Greenville are concerned about living an active, healthy lifestyle with a lot of exercise. It also shows there are a good many students who "got game," or at least think they do.
Intramural basketball games are held in Hayes gymnasium on Monday and Tuesday nights and start at 9:00 p.m.
