North Greenville University's club baseball team played their first opponent of the season, New River Community College, in a doubleheader, finishing the week with an even record of 1-1.

"We had some first game jitters. After that, we got everything together and played well offensively and defensively as we should," said Guy Bennett, sophomore sport management.

The first of two non-conference games started at noon on Shoeless Joe Jackson Field in Greenville, S.C. New River College, from Dublin, Va., won the game, 9-6.

The second game followed, and North Greenville held New River College to a shutout with Corey Gardner, freshman undecided, pitching a two-hitter. Offensively, Gardner had two hits and three RBIs for the game.

Matt Tunnell, South Atlantic Conference director, named Ben Williamson, freshman business administration, and Gardner as SAC players of the week.

Williamson started his National Club Baseball Association career by going 2-for-5 with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs scored.

The team is in Division II of the NCBA, which is the NCAA-like administrative body for nearly 200 college and university club baseball teams across the nation.

The Association is divided into two divisions with each division being separated into conferences.

Furman University, Davidson College and Duke University are in the SAC with North Greenville, and the team is scheduled to play several non-conference games against University of North Carolina - Charlotte, Appalachian State University and New River Community College.

North Greenville will face New River Community College in a doubleheader again on Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon.

"It's just one win. So, we're going to keep moving on like we should," Bennett said.
