The Crusader baseball team opened its 2008 season by splitting a doubleheader at St. Andrews Presbyterian College Feb. 2.
The Knights took the first game 5-1, but NGU squeaked by in the nightcap by a score of 5-4.
NGU scored first in the top of the fifth inning from a sacrifice fly by Chad Drosieko, freshman elementary education.
The inning was stifled by sophomore third baseman Charles Weber, of St. Andrews, as he made an inning-ending diving catch to kill a potential rally.
SAPC answered in the bottom half of the frame by earning all five of their runs.
Starting pitcher Devin Vance, senior business administration, equaled SAPC's senior B.J. Horne strikeout total of five but gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in the loss. Horne shut down the NGU offense, giving up only three hits.
SAPC forced NGU to play clutch defense in the second game.
After a double and two-run homer by Justin Walters, freshman intercultural studies, and a couple of unearned runs, the Crusaders found themselves with a 5-2 lead.
A rally by the Knights in the bottom of the seventh scored two runs and had the tying and winning runs in scoring position with two outs.
Mark Bordeaux, junior psychology, forced a groundout to complete the save and secure the win for Grayson Smith, junior mathematics.
NGU hosts Erskine College at 1 p.m. on Feb. 8, and a doubleheader at 12 p.m. on Feb. 9.

The facts need to be verified in this article! There were back to back doubles by Marshall and Kelley. Then the home run was by Marshall. The additional runs were delivered by later in the 6th. (Continued…)
